Program details

Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, offered through the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science, covers biology across scales from biomolecules to the biosphere, including the evolutionary effects of climate change, microbial applications, and ecosystem productivity. The curriculum builds quantitative skills such as programming and modelling alongside hands-on laboratory work in supervised settings. Students can choose one of three concentrations: Biodiversity & Conservation, Biotechnology, or Genetics & Evolution. Work-integrated learning is available through the Science Internship Program, including laboratory-analyst and co-op style placements, and study-abroad options are offered through the university's international program partnerships. The program is delivered on the university's main campus in Calgary. It is described as the university's most broadly based life-sciences degree, allowing students to customize their studies within the three available concentrations. It suits students seeking flexibility across the biological sciences, and prepares graduates for careers in environmental management, conservation, scientific research, and biotechnology, as well as further study in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or education.
