Program details

Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering, offered through the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, shares a common first year of ten courses in mathematics, science, computing, engineering principles, communications, and design before students proceed into biomedical-specific coursework. Later courses cover anatomy and physiology, biomedical signals and instrumentation, sensor systems, data analytics, transport phenomena, and biomedical device design, combined with hands-on laboratory work. The program connects students with local industry and researchers across related fields, including nursing and veterinary medicine, and offers an optional 12-to-16-month work placement through the Engineering Career Centre as well as study-abroad opportunities. It is delivered at the university's Calgary campus. The program suits students interested in applying engineering methods to healthcare problems, and prepares graduates for roles in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical-technology sectors, or for further study in fields such as medicine, veterinary medicine, or law. Its collaborative, design-focused structure reflects the accredited engineering degree's emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork alongside core biomedical coursework.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Biomedical Engineering has no direct high-school entry average of its own: applicants enter Schulich's Engineering (common first year) program and are guaranteed their choice of major, including Biomedical Engineering, on completing all 10 first-year common-core courses. For Alberta high-school direct entry to the common first year, University of Calgary requires English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30 or Biology 30, with a stated competitive admission average in the low 90s. Other curricula and international applicants are assessed separately.

Application Details

Start Date: Fall
Application Deadline: For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary opens undergraduate applications for domestic applicants on 1 October 2026 and for international applicants on 15 August 2026, both closing on the same firm application deadline of 1 March 2027, with supporting documents due by 15 March 2027 and offers accepted by 1 May 2027. International applicants follow the identical March 1 deadline; the university publishes no separate, later international closing date. Applications are not accepted on a rolling basis after the deadline for most direct-entry programmes, though a small number of programmes (e.g. Nursing) run further selection rounds into the summer while space remains. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
