Program details
Overview
This program combines health sciences and engineering through two credential tracks: a four-year Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences stream and a five-year Bachelor of Engineering and Biomedical Engineering stream, each admitting a limited number of students. Both tracks share a common first-year curriculum before diverging, and applicants apply directly to their chosen track; a Discovery Track option also lets students explore before committing to a specialization. Teaching is project-based and hands-on from first year, including design-studio work with real-world clients, prototyping, and product testing, with anatomy laboratory work introduced in the second year for students on the health-sciences side. The engineering stream offers eight specialization variants, spanning disciplines such as chemical, civil, electrical, materials, mechanical, mechatronics, and software engineering. An optional, flexible co-op program is available. The program suits students interested in healthcare innovation who want to combine engineering methods with health-sciences knowledge, preparing graduates for biomedical engineering, biotechnology, or healthcare roles, or for further graduate study in research, health professions, or medicine. It is delivered at McMaster University's Hamilton campus.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences (iBioMed) is a limited-enrolment programme, about 155 seats per year, in the Faculty of Engineering. Ontario applicants apply through OUAC with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma including six Grade 12 U/M courses, with prerequisites such as Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry and Physics set by McMaster's Admission Requirements Tool. Applicants may apply directly to iBioMed or enter the first-year Discovery Track and rank their preferred iBioMed stream, including HESE, at the end of Level I; placement from Discovery Track is competitive and based on Level I GPA and available seats. As one of McMaster's most selective programmes, iBioMed also requires a supplementary application. International applicants present an equivalent secondary credential with the same prerequisites and undergo the same competitive and supplementary process. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an accepted test score: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 86 overall with a minimum of 20 per component for tests before 21 January 2026, unless exempt through four years of full-time English-medium study.
