BA/BS in Film Studies

This is a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies at the University of Calgary, delivered through the Faculty of Arts; a related Bachelor of Film Studies option is offered in partnership with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. The program examines film as an art form and traces how the medium has both reflected and shaped global culture since its origins, with sample coursework including film theory up to 1950, the history of popular cinema, issues in film history, and introductions to film studies and film research. Students can pursue an honours degree track involving in-depth study of a specific topic under faculty supervision, alongside co-operative work placement and study abroad options that let students combine paid work terms or international study with the degree. It suits students interested in the critical and historical study of cinema, preparing graduates for work in film and media criticism, film programming and production, cultural institutions, or university-level research and teaching.
