Overview

The PhD in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary is a thesis-based doctoral program in the Cumming School of Medicine. Research spans lung infections in cystic fibrosis and systemic infections such as sepsis, through to molecular diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccine development, training students as independent scientists and critical thinkers. The program is normally completed in four years of full-time study, with a maximum completion window of six years. Admission requires an MSc degree or equivalent, a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale over the two most recent years of full-time study, and two reference letters. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency as set out in the Academic Calendar. The program admits students in May, September, and January.
