Overview
The Master of Interior Design is a graduate degree offered jointly by the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the Fort Garry campus. The curriculum pairs design studios with supporting courses in design methods, processes, and theoretical foundations, and concludes with either a thesis or a practicum project in the student's chosen area of focus; some form of work experience or co-op participation is also required. The program is structured around three entry pathways with different lengths: a first-professional stream for students without a prior design credential, a shorter post-professional stream for those who already hold a CIDA-accredited degree and industry experience, and a pre-master's option for applicants with a bachelor's degree who lack specific prerequisite coursework. Departmental research and teaching strengths include universal access, cultural theory, design theory, lighting design, and the design of work environments, with an overall emphasis on human-centred, context-based design solutions. Students have access to facilities such as the FABLab, CADLab, and workshop spaces. The program is CIDA-accredited and graduates become eligible to sit the NCIDQ examination. It suits both those beginning a design career and practising designers pursuing advanced, research-oriented study.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the first-professional Master of Interior Design follows the Faculty of Architecture's own requirements rather than the university's general graduate minimums. Applicants normally hold an undergraduate degree in Interior Design or in Environmental Design (Interior Environment Option) from the Faculty of Architecture; those with degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Industrial Design are considered on a case-by-case basis. Separate post-professional (a CIDA-accredited Interior Design degree plus three years of work experience) and pre-master's (any bachelor's degree) routes are also offered. English language proficiency is required at a higher standard than the Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 94 (Internet-based), or CAEL 70. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, a statement of intent and a design portfolio (PDF, maximum 20MB). Canadian and US applicants must apply by January 15 and international applicants by December 1, for September entry; files are reviewed by the admissions committee in March.
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to the University of Manitoba. As of this September 2026 fetch, the Direct Entry deadlines page shows only the Fall 2026 cycle in full - University 1 and the Diploma in Agriculture at May 1, 2026 domestic / March 1, 2026 international, other Direct Entry programs at March 1, 2026 - a cycle that has already closed, alongside minor Winter 2027 (Dec 1, 2026) and Summer 2027 (Apr 1, 2027) intake deadlines. No Fall 2027 Direct Entry deadline has been published yet, so specific 2027 dates cannot be stated for the university's main intake. The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Jazz Studies deadline (January 15, applying equally to domestic and international applicants) is likewise confirmed only for the 2026-27 cycle, also closed, with no 2027-28 bulletin posted. These are described as fixed deadlines rather than rolling admission, and the university opens each new cycle's applications on October 1. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
