Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Agroecology is a four-year, 120-credit-hour program centred on managed ecosystems and the application of ecological practices to achieve economically and environmentally sustainable agricultural production. Students study the biological and physical components of ecosystems alongside sustainable agricultural methods, with sample coursework including principles of ecology, an introduction to agri-food systems, biological diversity, community ecology, environmental economics, soils and landscapes, and organic crop production. A Cooperative Education option is available, combining a paid placement with concurrent online coursework. Students may add a minor from eight options within Agricultural and Food Sciences, including Agronomy, Animal Systems, Crop Protection, Entomology, Food Science, Human Nutrition, Plant Biotechnology, and Soil Science, or from other faculties. Graduates meet the entry requirements to become Professional Agrologists through Agrologists Manitoba, the province's regulatory body for the profession. Admission Requirements: Admission is to the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences B.Sc. Agroecology program via two routes. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over an English 40S course, Applied or Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry requires a minimum 24 credit hours of university-level coursework with a minimum Adjusted GPA of 2.0; a higher average may be required if eligible candidates exceed available spaces. As prerequisites for required Agroecology courses, the program lists English 40S at a minimum of 60%, and Mathematics 40S (Pre-Calculus or Applied), Biology 40S, and Chemistry 40S each at a minimum of 50%.
