Program details

Overview

UNBC's Master of Engineering in Wood Engineering trains civil engineering graduates to design with wood as a primary structural and building-envelope material, reflecting British Columbia's timber resources and the province's shift toward sustainable wood construction. The program rests on three pillars: understanding wood's structural properties from supply chain through load-resisting design, hands-on construction of small-scale wood structures, and collaborative design-team practice. Completed in one to two years, coursework covers wood design, building envelope design, prefabrication and digital manufacturing, and a capstone Master of Engineering project, with electives in structural dynamics, seismic design, or finite element analysis. An optional co-operative education placement is strongly recommended, and applicants need a four-year baccalaureate in Civil Engineering plus the university's standard English-language requirements.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Degree requirement is specific and narrower than UNBC's general graduate rule: applicants must hold a four-year, 120 credit hour baccalaureate degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised institution, alongside the general graduate admission GPA of 3.00 (B) equivalent. English requirements are higher than for every other UNBC graduate program: IELTS 7.0 overall with no module below 6.5, TOEFL 100 internet-based with no section below 25, or Duolingo 135 with no sub-score below 125 - or an equivalent accepted score - unless an exemption applies. The application needs a statement of interest covering academic interests and ambitions, reasons for applying and a tentative course selection; a current curriculum vitae; and two references. Academic work written in another language may be submitted in English translation, provided you declare when you apply that a translation service was used and name the engine; UNBC also recommends including a sample originally composed in English. UNBC treats copied statements of interest or writing samples as plagiarism and declines such applications for misrepresentation.

Application Details

Start Date: September (Fall) start only - UNBC lists no Spring (May) or Winter (January) intake for this program.
Application Deadline: Fall (September) intake only - UNBC lists no Spring or Winter intake. Applications open 1 October. First deadline 15 January; second deadline 1 March for international applicants and 1 July for Canadian/domestic applicants. A first deadline is the date by which an application must be in to be guaranteed consideration and to be eligible for entrance awards; a second deadline extends the window but not award eligibility, and a program may close it early once it fills. UNBC publishes these as recurring annual dates and refreshes its graduate intakes each spring, so confirm the current cycle before applying.
