This undergraduate program leads to an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Ottawa, offered in English only. The 42-unit discipline concentration covers courses in the major historical periods and national traditions of literature in English, alongside creative writing and literary theory, plus general-interest courses in areas such as literature and film, children's literature, science fiction, graphic novels, and literature and the environment. Core first- and second-year courses introduce literary analysis, Indigenous literatures, and the contemporary world, followed by surveys of British literature before and after 1700, and Canadian, American, Asian-diaspora, and African-diaspora literatures. Upper-year requirements draw from four thematic lists covering literature before 1700, literature from 1700 to 1900, literature from 1900 to the present, and literary forms, theories, and methods, completed with 4000-level seminars or special-topics courses. Co-operative education is available when the program is taken as part of an honours degree. The program provides a foundation for graduate studies in English and prepares students for professional degrees such as Law, Business, and Education.
