Overview
The Major in Psychology is an undergraduate concentration within a Bachelor's degree at the University of Ottawa. Psychology is described as the science that studies human behaviour and mental processes, and the program covers its fundamentals with a particular focus on how people learn, communicate and interact with one another, preparing students for graduate studies in experimental psychology, clinical psychology, health sciences, education or administration. The 42-unit program includes compulsory courses such as Introduction to Psychology: Foundations and Applications, Child Development, Quantitative Methods in Psychology I, Social Psychology, Research Methods and Ethics, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour, a course chosen from Learning and Conditioning, Perception or Cognition, and further optional psychology courses at the 3000 and 4000 levels. The program is offered in both English and French, with a French immersion stream available to students who complete it as part of an honours degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario secondary-school applicants need English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U) as the only subject prerequisite; no other Grade 12 course is required. The published minimum admission average is 75%, calculated from the applicant's top six 4U/4M/DU grades including the language prerequisite. This line covers the great majority of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Sciences programs at the University of Ottawa, including single-subject majors, Honours variants, joint-honours combinations of two Arts or Social Sciences disciplines, and the general Interdisciplinary Studies (BA/BSocSc) credentials. Some programs in this group carry an additional stream (French Immersion, Co-op, or an In-Depth Experiential Learning Stream) that does not change the academic admission line. Meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission where a program is oversubscribed. Applicants completing Environmental Studies without Biology 4U are advised to take a replacement course in first year.
