The Major in Statistics is an undergraduate concentration within a Bachelor's degree at the University of Ottawa, offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The program covers probability, statistical inference, regression analysis and experimental design, building on a foundation of calculus, linear algebra and mathematical reasoning. Coursework includes survey sampling and a range of upper-year electives such as time series analysis, Bayesian inference and multivariate statistical methods. The Honours version of this program is accredited by the Statistical Society of Canada, allowing graduates to work toward the A.Stat. professional designation, and a co-operative education option combining academic study with paid work terms is available to students who complete the program as part of an honours degree. Students complete 60 units of coursework in the discipline in addition to general Bachelor's degree requirements. The program is offered in both English and French.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), Advanced Functions 4U (MHF4U), and Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U); unlike the laboratory-science programs, no additional Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Earth and Space Science course is required. The published minimum admission average is 78%. This line covers Mathematics and Statistics as standalone majors and the BSc-stream Mathematics and Economics joint program, which the Faculty of Science tracks separately from its Social Sciences namesake (the BSocSc Mathematics and Economics joint program, which instead uses the Social Sciences 75% Economics line). Meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission where enrolment is limited.
