The Major in Visual Arts is an undergraduate concentration within a Bachelor's degree at the University of Ottawa, delivered by the Department of Visual Arts. The program offers the same range of practical and theoretical course experiences as the university's Bachelor of Fine Arts but allows a greater number of electives, making it suitable preparation for careers such as fine arts education, arts administration, artist representation, conservation or curation. Compulsory coursework includes introductory painting and sculpture studios, a course in modern art history, a digital photography workshop and a capstone course in professional practices in art, alongside elective studio and art-history courses chosen across several thematic areas. The major can be combined with a minor or a second major, except the Major or Minor in Art History, and can lead to the university's Master of Fine Arts program. Students complete 42 units of coursework in the discipline in addition to general Bachelor's degree requirements. The program is offered in both English and French.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: In addition to the standard language prerequisite, English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), applicants to the Bachelor of Fine Arts must submit a portfolio of their creative work as part of the application file. The published minimum admission average is 75%, calculated the same way as other Arts programs from the applicant's top six 4U/4M/DU grades. No specific science or mathematics course is required. The portfolio is reviewed alongside the academic average, so meeting the 75% minimum does not guarantee an offer; the program is competitive and the strength of the portfolio is a significant factor in the final decision. This line is published under the Visual Arts BFA (OUAC code OVE); the Major in Visual Arts is treated the same way in the absence of a separate published entry.
