This joint honours programme combines computer science and mathematics with a specialization in data science, delivered jointly by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Computer science coursework covers computation and information-processing fundamentals and their application to building fast, reliable, scalable and secure software systems, with advanced topics in databases, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, security and distributed computing. Mathematics coursework covers calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics. The 150-unit curriculum progresses through data structures and algorithms, operating systems and software engineering to fourth-year courses in artificial intelligence, fundamentals of data science, computational statistics and topics in statistics, with electives in machine learning and an honours or undergraduate research project. It is offered in English and French, with co-operative education and a French immersion stream available for the computer science component. Graduates are prepared for careers applying statistical and computational methods to large-scale data analysis.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: For Ontario secondary school applicants, admission requires a minimum combined average of 70% in the prerequisite science and mathematics courses; the university considers the highest level of mathematics attempted when calculating the admission average, and applicants without Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U) may take a replacement course at the university before or during their first term. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
