This Honors program in Data Science, Computing option, is an interdisciplinary degree combining computing science, mathematics, and statistics to develop the technical knowledge and problem-solving skills needed to work with data rigorously and responsibly. Students learn to apply modern data science tools, understand their underlying principles, and develop new methods as technologies evolve; the Computing option emphasizes programming, algorithms, machine learning, and large-scale data systems. It is one of the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Science with Honors degrees, offered by the Faculty of Science, and is also available as a BSc Major degree. The Honors track embeds a research thesis project and requires students to maintain a higher academic standard than the Major program; a minor from the Faculty of Arts, Native Studies, Business, or Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences may be added, though a double major is not available. Graduates commonly pursue roles such as business intelligence analyst, data analyst, data scientist, database developer, quantitative analyst, and statistical modeler.
