The Master of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering is delivered jointly by the University of Ottawa and Carleton University through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Environmental Engineering (OCIENE), established in 2000, drawing on the University of Ottawa's Departments of Civil and Chemical Engineering together with Carleton's Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The thesis-based program emphasizes original research, with study areas including biofilms and biofilm technologies for water and wastewater treatment, membrane treatment of drinking water, and sustainable municipal waste management. Students develop skills in conducting independent research and preparing scholarly publications, and must identify a thesis supervisor before enrolling. Admission requires an honours bachelor's degree with a specialization or major in environmental engineering or a related engineering or science discipline, together with undergraduate-level coursework in mathematics, probability and statistics, and specific courses covering fluid mechanics and treatment principles. Full-time students are expected to complete degree requirements within two years.
