Overview

French at UPEI develops language proficiency in one of Canada's two official languages alongside cross-cultural awareness, preparing students for further academic study, research and work where French-language skills are sought after. The major requires a minimum of 42 semester hours of French, including the required courses French 2410 and French 2420, with at least 24 of those hours at the upper level; the minor requires 21 semester hours in total, with at least 9 hours at the upper level and at least 12 semester hours in a modern language other than French. Coursework builds oral and written fluency alongside study of Francophone literature, culture and linguistics, drawing on the language's use both within Canada and in Europe and Africa. Graduates leave with functional bilingual competency valued across education, government, translation, tourism and international business roles.

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: For high school graduates, successful completion of Grade 12 examinations in a University Preparatory Program with an overall average of at least 70% (75% for Quebec Secondary V students), including English, one Social Studies or Language course, and three other academic courses; Grade 12 Math is recommended.
