Program details

Overview

This program leads to a Master of Science in Earth Sciences at the University of Regina, a research-intensive graduate degree undertaken under close faculty supervision. Students take on primary responsibility for their own research activities as they work toward their thesis objectives. Departmental research spans several areas: hard-rock studies such as structural geology, metamorphic and igneous petrology, and mineral deposit geology; soft-rock studies including sedimentology, diagenesis, and glacial and Quaternary geology; geofluids research covering low-temperature geochemistry and fluid-flow modelling; environmental geoscience such as geobiology and geomicrobiology; and resource-focused work on mineral deposits, hydrocarbons, and reservoir characterization. Training combines field work with laboratory-based research, with access to facilities such as the Saskatchewan Subsurface Core Facility in Regina and equipment including scanning electron microscopes and X-ray diffractometers. The program is delivered on campus in Regina. It suits students with an undergraduate background in geology or a related earth science who want to pursue supervised research toward specialization in a particular subfield. Graduates are positioned for careers in mineral exploration, government geoscience agencies, and the petroleum industry, and may become eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The program page for Earth Sciences (MSc) states only the two-year program length and links to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) Application Guide and Program Requirements for admission detail, so the general FGSR Master's standard applies: applicants need a four-year bachelor's degree (or recognized equivalent) with a graduating average of at least 70%, plus sufficient undergraduate background in earth sciences to undertake graduate work in the field; a marginally lower average may still be accepted if performance in the final two years was 75% or higher. International applicants must show English proficiency of CAEL 70, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, PTE Academic 59, or Duolingo English Test 125 overall.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants to the University of Regina apply for Fall 2027 entry with a recommended early deadline of 15 March 2027 for best course selection and a final new-applicant deadline of 15 August 2027; Winter 2027-28 entry has an early deadline of 1 November 2026 and a final deadline of 15 December 2026, and Spring/Summer 2027 entry closes 15 April 2027. International (study-permit) applicants share the same final deadlines as domestic students for each term but have no separate early deadline. Numerous named programs, including Nursing, Social Work, Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work, Indigenous Fine Arts and Indigenous Education, carry their own earlier deadlines instead of the general dates. Admission is not described as rolling; late non-competitive applications are simply carried to the next term the program accepts. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
