Overview
This Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing is offered through the Faculty of Arts and typically takes about two years. Students choose from five routes: a course-based MA in English (ten seminar courses), a thesis-based MA in English (five courses plus a thesis on one area of English literature), a project-based MA in English (seven courses plus an academic project comparable to a journal article), a thesis-based MA in Creative Writing and English (five courses, at least two in creative writing workshops, plus a substantial manuscript with a critical introduction), and a project-based version (seven courses, at least two in creative writing, plus an extended creative work with a public presentation). Admission requires a four-year bachelor's degree in English with at least a 75 percent average, completion of a literary theory course such as ENGL 399 or its equivalent, and a writing sample. The program suits students pursuing advanced literary study or a creative writing practice within an academic setting. Described outcomes for graduates include published author, professor, teacher, librarian, and further doctoral study.

Admission Requirements: The English and creative writing graduate page's own FAQ sets its standard: applicants need a four-year bachelor's degree in English with an overall average of at least 75%, and must have successfully completed ENGL 399 or an equivalent Literary Theory course; applicants with a strong English background but a degree in another discipline may instead be considered as Qualifying students. All applicants must submit a writing sample and other supplementary materials, and the creative-writing route specifically requires an extended creative work (such as a poetry chapbook, one to two short stories or creative-nonfiction pieces, or a novel excerpt) with a public presentation on completion. English is one of the programs the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research holds to a higher English-proficiency bar: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall and per band, PTE Academic 68, CAEL 80, or Duolingo 130 overall (125 minimum on any section).
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants to the University of Regina apply for Fall 2027 entry with a recommended early deadline of 15 March 2027 for best course selection and a final new-applicant deadline of 15 August 2027; Winter 2027-28 entry has an early deadline of 1 November 2026 and a final deadline of 15 December 2026, and Spring/Summer 2027 entry closes 15 April 2027. International (study-permit) applicants share the same final deadlines as domestic students for each term but have no separate early deadline. Numerous named programs, including Nursing, Social Work, Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work, Indigenous Fine Arts and Indigenous Education, carry their own earlier deadlines instead of the general dates. Admission is not described as rolling; late non-competitive applications are simply carried to the next term the program accepts. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
