Program details

Overview

The program works through the nervous system at several scales, from molecules and single cells up to sensory systems, behaviour and cognition, with dedicated study of neurophysiology and neuroanatomy. It also includes prerequisite coursework relevant to professional health science schools such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Two pathways are available: a standard four-year Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) and an Honours variant, with students selecting a pathway in consultation with academic advisors. The program can be studied full-time or part-time, entered directly from high school, and started through off-campus flexible learning options. Course content includes the study of ion channels and neuron electrical activity, introductory neuroanatomy with laboratory dissection components, and cell biology covering eukaryotic cell organization and the flow of genetic information, giving students hands-on experience with experimental techniques. The program suits students aiming for admission to professional health science programs, those interested in advanced biomedical research at the master's or doctoral level, and those seeking technical research or laboratory roles in academia, industry, or government, providing a science-focused foundation centred on the structure and function of the nervous system.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from high school requires Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30 and Foundations of Mathematics 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 (Pre-Calculus strongly recommended, or MATH 102 at USask to clear the prerequisite in first year), each of these Grade 12 courses at a minimum of 70%, alongside an overall admission average of at least 70%; requirements are assessed against the applicant's own curriculum outside Saskatchewan. Applications are assessed on a rolling basis until seats fill, and applicants below the minimum average may be considered for the University of Saskatchewan Transition Entrance Program or special (mature) admission. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet USask's English proficiency requirement, shown on this programme's own admission page as IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 per band, or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with a minimum of 4.0 per section, or an institution-wide equivalent such as Duolingo English Test 120 or PTE Academic 63, or through prior English-medium study.

Start Date: September, January, May and July
Application Deadline: The University of Saskatchewan does not publish fixed general application deadlines for its direct-entry undergraduate colleges (Agriculture and Bioresources, Arts and Science, Education, Edwards School of Business, Engineering, Kinesiology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy): admission requirements and deadlines for the 2027-28 cycle become available only once applications open on 25 September 2026, and the site gives no separate international closing date. Non-direct professional programs set their own dates instead: for September 2027 entry, the College of Law's JD opens 15 October 2026 with rolling review to a 1 February 2027 documents deadline and is not currently accepting international applicants; the College of Medicine's MD applications close 1 October 2026 for domestic (Canadian citizen/PR) applicants only; and the Nutrition program's single deadline is 15 March 2027 for both domestic and international applicants, with no late applications considered. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
