Program details

Overview

This diploma provides a broad background in resource management for Indigenous communities, combining online and in-person coursework and drawing on both scientific and traditional knowledge for research and decision-making. It is offered through a combination of online and in-person courses and typically takes two to three years to complete. Students can enter the diploma directly from high school or first complete the Kanawayihetaytan Askiy certificate and ladder into the diploma program. The laddering certificate covers Indigenous rights, strategic and land-use planning, traditional knowledge and resource management, and can be started at the Saskatoon or Prince Albert campuses. The program suits students aiming for governance, management, administration, and leadership roles within their home communities, as well as leadership positions in local, provincial, and national settings. It is designed for students who want to address complex land management issues affecting First Nations communities while remaining connected to their home regions, combining Western resource-management science with Indigenous knowledge systems rather than following a standard environmental science curriculum.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The University of Saskatchewan's own Kanawayihetaytan Askiy admissions page lists the Diploma in Indigenous Resource Management's Saskatchewan high-school entrance requirements as Biology 30 (or university-level equivalent) and Foundations of Mathematics 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 (or university-level equivalent); up to two prerequisite deficiencies are allowed and must be cleared before the second year of study. The published minimum regular-admission average is 70%. Students may enter the diploma directly from high school or by first completing the Kanawayihetaytan Askiy Certificate and laddering in. Seats are also designated for verified Indigenous applicants whose calculated admission average falls between 65% and 69.9%, subject to Indigenous membership/citizenship verification through the university's PAWS portal. Applicants whose first language is not English must prove proficiency in English before admission, per USask's institution-wide requirement (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5, minimum 6.0 per band, or TOEFL iBT 86, minimum 19 per section). The program admits in January, May, July and September.
