Diaspora Studies Certificate is a certificate in Area Studies programme offered by University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, Canada. The programme runs for 3 semesters, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition for international students is CAD 797 per credit (CAD 167 per credit for local students).
This certificate examines why people migrate and resettle beyond national borders, shaped by historical, political, and social forces, drawing on Sociology, Political Science, India-Canada Studies, History, Anthropology, and English. Study opens with a core course on the culture and theory of diaspora, investigating the phenomenon across modern, postcolonial, and global contexts, before students complete the certificate through either coursework or an internship and service-learning option. Related careers include public service, community development, and immigration work.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed at least 45 university-level credits; students already enrolled in another UFV or post-secondary programme who have reached this threshold need only meet the individual course prerequisites for the certificate's electives. New students (not already admitted elsewhere at UFV) apply through the Qualifying Studies route and must satisfy UFV's general university admission requirements in addition to the 45-credit and course-prerequisite conditions. English proficiency is set at UFV's Entry level, met by IELTS Academic 6.0 (no band under 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80 (no section under 19), or PTE Academic 56 with 52 in writing. Exchange students may be admitted on UFV International's recommendation and approval of their proposed study plan.
Application Details
Start Date:September and January
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
