This part-time certificate builds practical public relations and communications skills, covering storytelling, social media, media relations, and professional writing. The program is made up of twelve courses plus a required two-week practicum at an assigned work site, and can be completed over one to three years since courses may be taken in any order across the fall, winter, and spring terms in which they are each offered once a year. Fall coursework touches PR fundamentals, public speaking, persuasive messaging, and media kits; winter covers social media, interviewing, internet writing, impression management, and marketing; spring adds visual communications, copyright and legal issues, employment messaging, and the practicum itself. Most courses run about 15 hours over three weeks, with a few shorter offerings at five hours over one week; all are delivered online with no fixed meeting times, aside from the in-person practicum. There are no course prerequisites, though every course must be finished before a student can start the practicum. UFV points applicants to its Academic Calendar for entrance requirements. The certificate suits people pursuing or advancing careers in public relations, communications, or social media management across a range of industries, and who need a flexible, self-paced study schedule.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UFV's Academic Calendar sets out the Public Relations Certificate's entrance requirements: applicants must have B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or be at least 19 years old before their first day of classes, and must meet UFV's Entry-level English language proficiency requirement. That Entry-level standard is satisfied by an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5, a TOEFL iBT score of 80 with no section below 19, PTE Academic 56 with 52 or higher in Writing, CAEL 60+, MELAB 80+, CanTEST 4.0 overall, or a Duolingo English Test score of 100-109. The certificate's own courses carry no further prerequisites, though all courses must be completed before a student qualifies for the practicum. Qualified applicants are admitted on a continuous, application-date basis once their documentation and fee are submitted, with intakes in September, January and May.
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
