Overview

Applied Genetics and Biotechnology is a Major program administered by the Human Biology Program in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science. Formerly known as Fundamental Genetics and its Applications, the program provides a foundation in the biological sciences with a focus on genetics and its applications in medicine, the environment, and biotechnology. The 8.0-credit Major, open to students who have completed 4.0 credits, is organized across chemical and physical foundations (chemistry, mathematics or physics, biochemistry), biological foundations, fundamental genetics, applied genetics (including HMB201H1 and elective credits from specialized courses), and data-analysis and research-based courses in statistics and a research project, concluding with a 0.5 credit at the 400-level. The major cannot be paired with another Human Biology Program managed major. Students may apply after Year 1 or Year 2 for the Arts & Science Internship Program work-integrated learning stream. The program prepares graduates for further study or careers in biotechnology, genetics, and biomedical research.
