Overview
Biochemistry is offered as an Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto Scarborough (Major) and at the St. George campus (Major and Specialist, through the Department of Biochemistry), exploring the chemistry of living systems. Students take a shared core of biology and chemistry courses in the first two years before advancing to courses that examine the chemistry of proteins, enzymes, and metabolism. At Scarborough, the Major combines theory with hands-on laboratory technique, including research design and current methods, and runs four years full-time with a standard track and a co-op option that adds paid work terms without lengthening the degree. The program is considered strong preparation for professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, and law, alongside graduate study and careers in biochemistry, biotechnology, and related life-science research.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English, with a minimum 70% in English. The Scarborough standard program is assessed on an approximate overall average in the mid-70s; the co-op stream is assessed in the high 70s. Required Grade 12 courses include Biology (SBI4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U), and Chemistry (SCH4U), with Physics (SPH4U) recommended.
