English at the University of Toronto is an Honours Bachelor of Arts program offered across all three campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. It can be taken as a Major, Minor, or Specialist, letting students combine it with other subjects or concentrate more heavily in the discipline. The program sits within the university's Literature, Language & Culture subject grouping, described by the university as involving the analysis of complex ideas and the exploration of human expression through literature, language, philosophy, and cultural studies. At the Scarborough campus, English is offered with a work-integrated learning option, giving students the chance to pair academic study with a practical, workplace-based component. The program suits students drawn to close reading, critical writing, and the study of literary and cultural texts across periods and genres, whether as a foundation for graduate study, teaching, publishing, law, or other fields where analytical and communication skills are valued. Because it runs at three campuses, students can choose the setting, class sizes, and course mix that best fit their goals within the same degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario applicants apply through OUAC 101/105 and need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six 4U/M courses including English (ENG4U/EAE4U); the English program itself sets no further subject prerequisite, and the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is excluded from admission. International applicants use the same OUAC system and are assessed on their own senior secondary credential (IB Diploma, GCE A Levels, AP/US diploma, national school-leaving certificates), presenting the equivalent English prerequisite. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an accepted English proficiency test unless exempt — IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with 4.5 in Writing and 4.0 in Speaking for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 — and all applicants complete a senior-level English course equivalent to ENG4U. The program page (future.utoronto.ca/program/english) lists no separate minimum average; admission across the Faculty of Arts & Science, UTM and UTSC is competitive rather than threshold-based.
