Overview

The Centre for Comparative Literature's PhD program accommodates students whose research interests are united by a shared concern for comparative issues across languages and national literary traditions. Students work across linguistic boundaries and may incorporate creative practice alongside humanities-based theory and scholarship. Admission requires an appropriate master's degree, normally in comparative literature, though applicants with a master's in another literary-studies discipline are also considered, along with demonstrated ability to conduct advanced research in two languages and literatures other than English. Applications include two referee reports, a statement of up to 500 words, and a sample of written work, typically a short essay on a literary topic. The standard program runs four years full-time from a master's degree, extending to five years for direct entry from a bachelor's degree, and is delivered in person on the St. George campus.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the PhD requires an appropriate master's degree with an average grade of at least A-, normally in comparative literature, though applicants with a master's in another humanities discipline involving literary studies are also considered. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct advanced research in two languages and literatures other than English. Standardized English-language test requirements are not stated on the program's own admissions page; general School of Graduate Studies regulations apply.
