MA/MS in Forestry (MScF)

The Master of Science in Forestry (MScF) is a research- and thesis-based graduate program offered by the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto. Students pursue specializations aligned with faculty expertise across areas including urban forestry, biomaterials and mass timber, forest restoration and stability, and climate change and the bioeconomy, alongside forest conservation, wildlife ecology, invasive species management, sustainable forestry, and fire and ecosystem management. Degree requirements include 1.0 full-course equivalent of coursework — a graduate seminar plus an elective — and a research thesis with an oral defence; additional or alternative coursework may be required depending on a student's background. Applicants identify and make initial contact with a potential supervisor before the graduate unit confirms the supervisory assignment and an offer is made. High-performing students may be considered for transfer to the PhD program by the end of their first year. Admission requires an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university with a final-year average of at least mid-B, or B+ for the collaborative specialization, along with transcripts, three references, a letter of intent, a resumé, and a writing sample.
