Overview

The Master of Science (MSc) in Genetic Counselling is a two-year, full-time program offered by the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with the Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mount Sinai Hospital. The program combines coursework, fieldwork, and clinical rotations with an independent research project, preparing students with the academic and clinical skills needed to practise genetic counselling. It holds full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC), and graduates are eligible for certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling (CBGC). Admission requires a four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university with a minimum B+ average, including coursework in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, embryology or animal developmental biology, statistics, and psychology, along with demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills from experience in a counselling setting. All applicants must register with the National Matching Service (NMS).
