Overview
The Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Toronto is offered through the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work as a professional and academic program preparing graduates for social work practice. The curriculum builds a generic foundation of core social work knowledge, values, and skills applicable across fields and methods of practice, then allows students to pursue specialized practice in one of six areas: Children and their Families, Gerontology, Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency, Mental Health and Health, Social Justice and Diversity, or Social Service Administration. The program is designed to meet the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CASWE), and admission does not require standardized test scores, with a minimum admission average in the mid-B range in the final year of full-time study. The program suits students who already hold an undergraduate degree and want a graduate-level, practice-oriented credential that combines a shared professional foundation with the option to specialize in a chosen area of social work relevant to Canada's growing social-service sector.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The two-year MSW requires an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university with at least a mid-B in the final year of full-time study (300/400-level courses), including at least three full social-science courses and a half-credit in research methodology; the Advanced Standing option instead requires a Bachelor of Social Work degree. Voluntary or paid experience in social services and knowledge of critical social issues are recommended though not mandatory. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who did not study at a Canadian university taught in English, must meet the university's School of Graduate Studies proficiency minimums — TOEFL iBT 93 overall with at least 22 in each component, or IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each band — since the Factor-Inwentash Faculty's own admission page does not list separate scores. The Faculty notes that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as applications exceed available spaces; a CV, personal statement and references form part of the application.

Application Deadline:University of Toronto uses one application deadline for domestic and international applicants alike for Fall 2027 entry: 15 January 2027 for most programmes, including Applied Science & Engineering, Arts & Science (St. George), the iSchool, Kinesiology & Physical Education, Nursing, Physician Assistant, and UTM and UTSC, with supporting documents also due 15 January 2027 (Engineering) or 1 February 2027 (most others). Medical Radiation Sciences has an extended 1 February 2027 deadline. A recommended early-application date of 7 November 2026 applies across the board, and several programmes (Rotman Commerce, Computer Science, Architecture, Kinesiology) require a supplementary component due 1 February 2027. Admission decisions are released from January through late May; UofT does not describe any programme as rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
