The Master of Social Work, Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency (ITR) field is offered by the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto, the oldest school of social work in Canada. Described as the first program of its kind in North America, it prepares social workers to work with individuals, families, and communities affected by historical and intergenerational trauma, grounded in Indigenous values of belonging, cooperation, respect, and kindness. The two-year, full-time program (six sessions, Fall-Winter-Summer registration cycles) combines face-to-face week-long courses, online distance learning, and mentored field placements, a hybrid format designed to let students remain in their home communities rather than relocate to Toronto for the full degree. The field is open to applicants holding either a general bachelor's degree or a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). Admission to the Master of Social Work program generally requires a minimum mid-B average in the final year of full-time study, and no standardized admissions tests are required. The Faculty also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work.
