Overview
This two-year, thesis-based Physics MSc offers the same four concentration choices as the department's doctoral program — standard physics, astronomy, medical physics, and ocean physics — giving master's students early access to specialized labs and research groups. Applicants need an honours degree in physics, astronomy, or a related field, and those with degrees from outside North America are asked to submit GRE General and Physics Subject scores. As with the PhD, students aren't required to list a supervisor when they apply, leaving room to find the right research fit after admission. The department frames the degree around research that extends understanding of the universe across scales from the subatomic to the cosmological. As with the PhD, the priority deadline for September entry is December 1 of the previous year, aligning with major scholarship competitions.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an Honours degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy or a related field; the program adds no separate numeric minimum average on top of this and follows UVic's general graduate English-language floor of IELTS overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT overall 90 with no section below 20. A complete application includes a personal statement, a current resume, post-secondary transcripts, and the names and email addresses of two referees; applicants whose undergraduate degree is from outside North America are additionally encouraged, though not required, to submit GRE General and Physics Subject test results. The program's regular entry point is September, with applications due December 1 of the previous year (also the deadline for NSERC/CIHR scholarship consideration); January and May entry are offered only in exceptional circumstances, with applications required at least two months before the term starts.
