Overview

This is a thesis-based Master of Science offered on campus by the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. Students complete a minimum of 12 units of coursework, including at least one of three specified graduate physics courses (PHYS 511, PHYS 524, or PHYS 530), with the remaining courses selected in coordination with the student's supervisor, supervisory committee and the graduate chair. The core of the degree is a research project presented in a written thesis and defended in an oral examination, and from the second year onward students are required to present their research at least once a year at a departmental or focus-area seminar. Students must also complete the university's Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement by the end of their first term of registration. The minimum residence requirement is two four-month terms of full-time attendance, and completion time varies with the student's background and research area.

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree in physics, engineering physics, geophysics, or an equivalent program, with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution, calculated on the last 60 units or two years of full-time graded coursework. Where applicable, applicants must meet the minimum GPS English Language Requirement. Applicants must also submit an up-to-date CV, a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and a Request for Financial Support if required.
