Jointly offered by the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Humanities, and the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures, this two-term graduate certificate trains language specialists and community leaders in Indigenous language revitalization without requiring a full master's commitment. A cohort is admitted every two years, blending an intensive summer session with several shorter on-campus sessions across the year, and exceptional entry is available to skilled applicants without a completed undergraduate degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The program's own page does not require an undergraduate degree outright: standard applicants are expected to hold one, but exceptional entry without a degree is available to applicants who demonstrate extensive expertise in the language and culture of their community and significant leadership in language-and-culture revitalization work; no GPA threshold is stated for either route. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet UVic's graduate language-proficiency requirement, either IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with no section below 4.0 (UVic's scale for tests taken from January 2026). Two confidential assessment reports (an Indigenous language authority confirming fluency is accepted in place of an academic referee), a 500-word statement of intent, and transcripts (unofficial accepted) are required; exceptional-entry applicants add a CV, a portfolio of prior education and experience, and a further reference letter on language fluency. The deadline for September entry is January 31.
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
