University of the Fraser Valley offers Halq’eméylem Graduate Certificate, a postgraduate certificate in Indigenous Focus programme in Abbotsford, Canada. The programme runs for 4 semesters, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition for international students is CAD 833 per credit (CAD 594 per credit for local students).
UFV's Graduate Certificate in Halq’eméylem is a 12-credit, part-time program on the Chilliwack campus, made up of four three-credit courses that can be completed over four semesters, aimed at building advanced knowledge and skills in reviving, learning, and using the endangered Halq’eméylem language. Coursework combines language-restoration research and revitalization strategy with a deeper grounding in Stó:lō worldview and culture, following an immersion-based teaching model meant to bridge current teachers, prospective educators, and community members. Standard admission requires completion of UFV's Advanced Proficiency Certificate in Halq’eméylem plus a bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.00 CGPA in the final two years, but applicants without those credentials can instead apply through competency-based admission by submitting a portfolio documenting five years of work in the language, a CV, and professional references. At least 75% of coursework must be completed at UFV, students must maintain a 3.00 program GPA to continue, and graduates can go on to UFV's Graduate Diploma in Halq’eméylem.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: UFV's Academic Calendar entry for the Graduate Certificate in Halq'eméylem sets two standard pathways: completion of the Advanced Proficiency Certificate in Halq'eméylem, or a bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 over the last two years of that degree. Applicants meeting neither may seek exceptional admission by submitting a portfolio documenting at least five years of learning achieved in Halq'eméylem language teaching, learning, or revitalization, a complete CV or resume, and letters of reference addressing both academic and professional achievement in the field. The calendar entry states no English-language test score; as a graduate program, UFV's general Degree/diploma-level English standard applies, met by IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum band of 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20, PTE 61 with 60 in writing, or Duolingo 110, per UFV International's English language requirements page.
