Overview
The PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo is a thesis-based doctoral program offered by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. Students undertake independent research on complex engineering problems within one of four groups: Environmental and Water Resource Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structures, Mechanics and Construction Engineering, or Transportation Engineering, often collaborating across the School of Architecture, Planning, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Biology. The program runs full-time over a nominal 48 months, is delivered on-campus, and admits students each September, January and May. Applicants require a master's degree with an 80% average in coursework and demonstrated evidence of the ability to pursue independent research. Applicants whose prior education was not in English must demonstrate English proficiency through an accepted test. Graduates are prepared for research, academic and senior engineering careers, supported by a program-wide housing guarantee for admitted students.
