French Studies at the University of Waterloo leads to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Faculty of Arts and offers doctoral research across three fields: Cultural Studies in a Francophone Context, Early Modern French Literary Studies and Theory, and Electronic Archiving, Editing and Publishing in a Francophone Context. Students undertake original research projects and experiential education opportunities within the Department of French Studies, working toward a dissertation under faculty supervision. The program follows directly from a Master of Arts in French Studies or a closely related field and prepares graduates for research and academic careers addressing Francophone culture, literature, and digital humanities. The program is offered full-time and on-campus, with intakes in the fall and winter terms.
