Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography at the University of Waterloo is a research-based graduate program in the Faculty of Environment. Students conduct original research in one of four areas: environmental and resource management, environmental science, geomatics, or human geography, and produce a thesis that contributes new knowledge to the discipline. The program bridges social science, environmental information technology, and physical science, drawing on the department's strengths in geomatics and environmental research. Admission requires students to secure a faculty supervisor before applying. Coursework is combined with independent research supervised by faculty in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. Graduates of the program go on to careers in educational services, public administration, environmental consulting, and scientific research, as well as academic positions. The program is delivered on campus and takes 48 months to complete on a full-time basis, with admission available in the fall and winter terms.
