Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography, Collaborative Aeronautics program at the University of Waterloo combines doctoral research in geography with cross-disciplinary aeronautics training. Students conduct research in one of four areas of geography — environmental and resource management, environmental science, geomatics, or human geography — while completing additional coursework and seminars on aviation, aerospace, and space through the Collaborative Aeronautics program. The degree culminates in a thesis contributing new knowledge to geography, informed by the aeronautics specialization. Admission requires students to secure a supervisor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management before applying. The program is delivered on campus and takes 48 months to complete on a full-time basis, with admission in the fall and winter terms. Graduates are prepared for research and applied roles at the intersection of geography and the aviation, aerospace, and space sectors, alongside standard geography career paths in education, public administration, and environmental science.
