Overview
This course examines how artificial intelligence affects democratic governance, including its potential benefits and the strategies needed to preserve democratic legitimacy. It covers how AI influences the democratic process broadly, from the formation of public opinion to political decision-making, public administration, and citizens' access to resources, drawing on examples such as predictive analytics used in fraud detection and healthcare administration, AI applied to policy drafting, and generative AI's effect on the information environment in which opinions are formed. The course also considers how such tools can bring efficiencies and innovation while carrying unintended consequences that may undermine the legitimacy of democratic processes.
