Estonian Studies is a two-year, four-semester master's programme taught in English for students who want a deeper picture of Estonia, seen through its language, culture, history and current society. Estonian language learning runs throughout alongside humanities coursework, and the two strands reinforce each other.
Teaching is organised in small groups that rely on discussion, reading and writing as well as language study, and students work closely with their lecturers and researchers. Students develop the ability to analyse sources, connect language with culture and reach informed interpretations of Estonia's past and present, including cultural texts, historical experience and current debates.
Living in Tallinn gives these questions a real setting, with archives and cultural institutions close at hand, together with literary events, film festivals, public debate and multilingual daily life. Students can practise their Estonian outside the classroom and see how the topics discussed in courses appear in daily life and cultural events.
