Fiji National University's Diploma in Engineering (Civil) (Level 6) prepares students for further study toward a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering in Fiji or overseas, while familiarising them with the construction-industry tools, procedures and standard practices used on site. Delivered over three years for 360 credit points at the Samabula campus, the programme trains graduates to assist professional civil engineers with analysing technical problems in structural design, carrying out geotechnical investigations and preparing geotechnical reports, conducting land surveys and draughting topographical maps, and preparing quantity surveys for structures including water pipelines, retaining structures, roadway embankments, bridges, railways, airports and buildings. Units progress from civil engineering materials, mechanics, engineering mathematics, land surveying, computer programming and workshop practice in the first year to civil measurements, construction technology, soil mechanics, hydraulics, structural design and engineering project management in the second. Entry requires a pass in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination with at least 50 percent in Mathematics, English, Physics and a further science subject, admitting students directly into the first year; Certificate IV holders, or mature applicants with relevant industrial experience approved by the Dean of CETVET, may also be admitted.
