The Smart Grids specialisation develops systems-thinking skills together with a technical skillset for design and analysis within electrical power engineering, covering advanced energy storage, the integration of renewable energy sources, grid automation and demand response, and data-driven optimisation of power systems. Teaching draws on ongoing research into electric power systems, high-voltage engineering, power electronics and electromechanics. The aim is to equip students to design and implement intelligent energy systems that improve the effectiveness, stability and reliability of electricity networks and that integrate distributed energy resources while raising the share of renewable generation without weakening system security. It forms one of the specialisations within the Master's Programme that covers Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering and suits applicants with a bachelor's background in power electronics, electrical power engineering, energy management, electricity markets or renewable energy.
