The civil engineering master's programme builds multidisciplinary expertise in the built environment and its environmental, social and economic sustainability, combining problem-solving with the ability to develop and apply new technologies; graduates pursue expert and executive roles in consulting, construction, transport and logistics, and public bodies at various levels, as well as in universities and research institutes. Within the two-year programme, students can major in sustainable transport, geotechnical engineering, or structural engineering. The geotechnical engineering specialisation covers the geology, site investigation methods, soil material properties, groundwater conditions and analysis methods needed to design economical and sustainable foundations for buildings and infrastructure, including emerging applications such as wind farms, solar installations and the recycling of construction materials. The specialisation responds to a long-running shortage of geotechnical engineers in Finland, training specialists for national and international employers in the field.
