Biostatistics is a doctoral programme at the University of Iceland, linked to the Centre of Public Health Sciences. Its purpose is to give students grounding in scientific method and research practice, so they can work independently in their chosen field.
The training covers planning and carrying out research, processing and interpreting findings, presenting and discussing results, and publishing in international peer-reviewed journals. The centrepiece is an independent research thesis of 180 ECTS that includes peer-reviewed publications, and students may also have to take selected courses.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but a candidate must first reach agreement with a supervisor and prepare a research proposal. Entry normally requires a master's degree in biostatistics or a related discipline, together with preparatory courses in mathematical analysis, biostatistics and clinical prediction models. Exceptions are possible, in which case required courses can be completed during the first semester of study.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Master's degree (MS) in biostatistics or related disciplines. Preparation in mathematical analysis (STÆ104G), biostatistics I (LÝÐ105F or LÝÐ004M) and clinical prediction models (LÝÐ301F) or equivalent is required. In special cases an application may be processed before course requirements are met, with selected courses completed in the first semester. Applicants need an agreement with a supervisor and a research proposal.
