MA/MS in Icelandic Literature

Icelandic Literature is an MA programme of 120 credits at the School of Humanities, University of Iceland. It gives students scientific training and prepares them for further study and for a range of jobs, including upper secondary teaching, scholarly work and doctoral study. The study plan covers two years of autumn and spring courses. Medieval and early material features strongly, with courses on gods, men and monsters in Norse sources, Egil's Saga, and the rímur tradition with its medieval romance background. Later periods are covered by courses on Romanticism and emotion in the nineteenth century and on modernism in literature. Other courses include literature and magic, stories and places, stylistics, a workshop in cultural journalism, editing and academic writing, and a course on Icelandic in the school system.
