Program details

Overview

Industrial Biotechnology is a 120-unit interdisciplinary master's route at the University of Iceland that connects health sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry and other natural sciences. It responds to industry's growing need for staff with specialised biotechnology knowledge and to students' interest in innovation in the field. The study plan covers two years. Autumn courses include laboratory safety, an introduction to industrial biotechnology, a seminar, planning and methods in research, microbiology, microbes and biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals. Spring courses include reaction design, a practical course on the expression, purification and quality of proteins, and chemical analysis of biopharmaceuticals. Students take the laboratory safety course in both terms, and the programme is built around practical work alongside the courses. A seminar in industrial biotechnology is offered in both autumn and spring.
