This 180-unit programme in medicine at the University of Iceland's School of Health Sciences leads to the kandídatspróf, the qualification that gives the right to work as a medical candidate. Students are prepared for increasing responsibility and independent decision-making under the guidance of specialist physicians.
The study plan runs over three years with year-long courses in theoretical and clinical internal medicine, theoretical and clinical surgery, ear, nose and throat diseases, imaging, and clinical method, including communication between doctor and patient. The internal medicine courses combine a clinical and a theoretical part, are assessed by a written exam and a clinical stations exam, and cover the main diseases and subspecialties such as haematology, endocrinology, rheumatology, cardiology, oncology and infectious diseases. Autumn courses include chemical pathology, and study at Akureyri Hospital is overseen by an associate professor there.
