The Bachelor of Education in Special Education at The Mico University College is a four-year degree that prepares teachers to work with learners who have mild and moderate difficulties. Special education here means teaching designed around the needs of children with hearing or visual impairment, intellectual or learning disabilities, and communication or behavioural disorders.
Students add an elective area from four options: educational assessment and instructional planning, deafness and hard of hearing, blindness and visual impairment, or moderate and severe disabilities. Braille proficiency forms part of the visual impairment option, while the hearing option centres on sign language fluency and printed English.
Graduates have worked as special educators in specialist and mainstream schools, resource room teachers, itinerant teachers, and coordinators of remedial centres and centres of excellence.
