The FdA Sport Coaching and Development is a foundation degree that lasts two years and is studied full time, for people who want to become sport coaches or development practitioners. Students are taught to prepare, run and review coaching sessions and to build and run sport development programmes.
Study areas include the science behind coaching, covering sport psychology and physiology, methods of fitness training, sport development and coaching a mix of groups. Each year includes a full-time placement lasting one month with a local organisation working in sport, physical activity, education or health.
The award is a stepping stone to the final top-up year of the BA (Hons) in the same subject, which finishes a full honours degree, and it can also open a route to postgraduate teacher training for those who want to teach PE. A DBS check applies, and fees could change.
