BA/BS in Biotehnoloģija un bioinženierija

This joint bachelor's degree between Riga Technical University and the University of Latvia begins with foundational courses in biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry before moving into more advanced study in either a molecular or an organismal biology direction. Teaching builds critical thinking, analysis and argumentation skills alongside the ability to design biotechnological equipment and processes and to develop new products, delivered in shared classrooms and laboratories at both universities. Students also learn to carry out independent research within a chosen area of biology, working with laboratory equipment to collect, analyse and present data, and the degree concludes with a bachelor's thesis built on that research. The later coursework also introduces the ethical, intellectual-property and commercialisation issues involved in bringing biotechnology research results to practical use.
